Interesting article on Naim Ateek. Remember I have in my time heard hate campaigns against Nelson Mandela, Desmond Tutu and Sandinistas for starters. I have met many who tell me how their parents believed the most dreadful things about Mohandas Gandhi. Ateel deserves a hearing even if you disagree with him. I will not denigrate this Christian anymore than I will automaticaaly support him in all he contends for.

I am a 52 year old Methodist minister based in Nottingham having served as a layworker on Isle of Man and a minister in Bideford. Married to the long suffering Andrea for 22 years, we have two great children. James is 18 years old and Kaye is 16 years old. I am theologically a liberal evangelical. I believe that faith influences political judgements so I am a convinced believer that it is imperative to support the poor and the powerless and to seek to promote their interests above all others.If this puts me on the left so be it. The views on my personal blog are mine alone and do not represent those of the Methodist Church or any of the congregations that I serve.

Paul, I had never heard of Naim Ateek until I read what he had said at the Methodist Conference in the Methodist Recorder. (Although I see that his work is listed in a book that I read as a favour a friend pre publication).
As far as I know there have been no complaints about the accuracy of the Recorders report.
I was disgusted by what I saw written as a record of his speech. It truly was a day of shame that this man was given a platform at our conference and no one has disowned his speech.
I'm sorry to disagree with you on this one.
