Libel law used as censorship
It is a sad fact of life that all too often libel laws are used by the powerful to avoid necessary questioning of their conduct. The greatest master of this was that dreadful old fraud, Robert Maxwell. Clearly his spirit is alive.
I draw you attention to two cases that should cause concern.
The first concerns that splendid champion of human rights, Craig Murray. His latest problem comes from mercenary commander Tim Spicer.
The most informative comment on Spicer comes from Barack Obama who has observed;
"...As you know, the CEO of Aegis Defense Services Tim Spicer has been implicated in a variety of human rights abuses around the globe. Given his history, I agree that the United States should consider rescinding its contract with his company."
Interestingly, the lawyers acting for Spicer who have a sort of form concerning Murray. Last year they acted for billionaire, Usmanov, in trying to silence Murray. Then they were sufficiently contemptuous of free speech to shut Murray's blog down but they lacked the balls to challenge Murray's assertion in court - what more can you expect from a firm that makes its reputation fawning to the rich?
The second current example concerns SSG the wonderfully illiberal bunch who have spent the past year destroying the fine heritage of SPCK which was once the best Christian booksellers. They are also a firm whos treatment of staff involves treating them as the equivalent of what sometimes gets stuck on the soles of your shoes after walking the dog.
Now in the spirit of Christian love these devils have threatened one of the finest Christain bloggers, Dave Walker who happens to be Cartoonist in Residence at the Lambeth Conference. Daave has been threatened with legal action for challenging this bunch of irreligious crackpots and has so had to take his articles on the matter down as he cannot afford a legal battle.
My friend Richard Hall has told ths story and has pointed out that through google you can still read the relevant articles. I urge readers to read these articles because it will help you recognise on of the most malign influences to have hit the Christian Church.
Both of these cases are about abuse of power and remind us that the wealthy will always use collaborating Quislings in the law to silence criticism.
I will do my best to keep both of these stories alive. After all I have little money so there is absolutely no point in suing me - I have nothing to lose!
